I have extremely fine, dry hair that is now thinning and falling out. I'm afraid to use products with chemicals and would like to find a more natural means of thickening and growing more hair.

Hi . I am a hairstylist and would like you to answer some questions first. Do you take any medication for high blood pressure? Are you in a high stress job? Do you color your hair with home products? These can affect your hair., also the way you take care of the hair is also important. Hair should be brushed starting from the ends to the scalp with a soft to medium natural bristle brush. Shampooing in luke warm or cool water, rinse well and gently towell blot. Apply a small amount of conditioner to the ends first working up the hair and not necessarily all the way to the scalp.if it is long (below the shoulder) put it up in a clipand cover with a shower cap. if you are in the shower, wait until you are done with your shower and rinse with cool water.Gently squeeze out the water with a dry towel making sure you don't ruffup the hair . Come frome the ends to the scalp in sections with a wide tooth comb. If you use a blow dryer ,flatiron,curling iron , use a heat protectant styling product to prevent damage to the hair. A product line I would reccomend would be Pureology. I contains no harmful chemicals such as sulfites, propelene glycol , cocamide dea, which cause cancer and are dangerous chemicals. Also Bath and Body works carry a line of organic products that are very good. You should select a volumizing product line, Use these products sparingly including the shampoo as they may not suds as well as chemical products, but they are more concentrated .It may be good to check with a local healt or organic food store as sometimes they have products that are made with natural ingredients You cannot make your hair any thicker than it originall was, as ther eis no way to creat hair follicles , but you can prevent breakeage and damage by taking a little more care and time with your hair.. This will take time and patience , and you may respond to this with any questions you may have. Good luck, Michael

No, You don't say if your a man or woman, but if your a man, there is a remedy for not looking like you have fine thinning hair. Shave your head. Go Bald. Its okay to just use clippers and have a little stubble even. Its maintenance free, and in these modern times when there is no "in style", only "personal style", its quite acceptable. And as an added bonus, if you shave your head and then go out and buy yourself a tailored suit for at least $1000, whenever you wear it, you'll look like you come from the future.

Honey, DO NOT GOT it cut in layers!! NO NO!! a short bob--or chin length blunt cut.... ALL ONE LENGTH ONLY layer/feather around your face a veryyyyy Little. IF it is long enough to put up in a wee pony tail... use one of the cute curly little hair pieces on an elastic ban to put it up with...(get at most SALLY'S or beauty supply house). Saves the wear and tear on your hair. They are cute and fun.. GOOD LUCK

Razors make you have split ends and makes your hair look frizzy.

It is healthy , when they use the thinning shears.they will pull up your hair in pieces/chunks and thin as they go along. Its an amazing feeling , I love getting my hair thinned.

I have dark hair and I"m thinning at the crown making the white scalp more visible. I went to a REALLY expensive stylist and he said to cut it an inch thick but not to put any highlights in it. Do not get a hiar transplant, that's totally gross.

Do not do any sort of comb over, see above.

Do not color your scalp-- imagine their response when it starts to rub off!

Dying your hair, even the same color, makes your hair seem thicker-- that may cover it up some.

If you have darker hair, it may keep you looking young- even if you have a bald spot. Try dying it, dont go bald.

You could have your thyroid tested. Have them do an indepth testing on it. My overall testing was good, but I ended up having antibodies attacking my thyroid. I suffer from hair loss

i got diagnosed with a borderline underactive thyroid, my mum and grandmother had this also, and was told meds were unnecessary until i have a retest in 6 months.. i guess the thyroid can heal itself?

Hairloss is usually a sign of low T3 levels in those that are hypothyroid. The kelp may or may not help, but one thing its going to do is throw of the next batch of blood tests and it may stop you from getting on thyroid meds once again. Being a little bit hypothyroid is like being a little bit pregnant. Changes are hapening in your body well before the TSH level goes over range. The longer the condition goes without treatment, the worse the problem. I am hypothyrod and my first test came out normal and my symptoms got worse. Eventually 9 months later I got diagnosed thankfully.

A TSH over 2.0 is causing damage within the body, but most doctors will not treat until its above 3.0. Then there are other doctors going by the outdated range of 5.5. When you retest, make sure its in the morning only, as an afternoon test is worthless. Think seriously about the kelp. I am on kelp, but slowly switching to iodine. However, I got my thyroid levels correct first on Armour thyroid before I added any iodine.

Actually it will be softer. Sometimes a dipilatory cream, over a period of time will kill the hair folical.....meaning less hair will grown back in.

Note: Hair can not grow back thicker, there is only one hair folical per hair. There is no proof that the color will change.

If you cut it short, don't get it shorter than your chin, or else a really short bob would just emphasize the length of your face.

A good length would be past your chin but above your shoulders.

Bangs would work well in that they create the illusion of more width. Try side angled bangs; you know, the side-swept kind. Or if you don't mind having to deal with hair in your eyes, you can pull of those long bangs that go past your eyebrows.

Just stay away from blunt, thick bangs because they'll make your face longer and thinner.

I have the same problem I had really thick hair when I was a kid and now I don't. I get layers cut into my hair a lot and it makes my hair look thinner so I am gonna grow them out. I just depends but it probably won't help you with the volume. I would keep them at one length and cut them a little shorter. Also try a volumizing shampoo I use Herbal Essences volume it really helps.

Maybe you have time the night before? You can prep then...for waves, braid instead of putting into coils, since you have thin hair and the twists and bobby pins could break hair.

And get some cute accessories like barettes and hair bands. Love the messy bun. It's hot right now, and it's ok to leave bobby pins out and flyaways. It adds to the carefree, yet still chic look.

If you really need to get out the door in two seconds, then the ponytail is your answer. After you secure it, take two pieces from the side of the ponytail and pull it upwards to move your scrunchie up and give you body at the crown. This will take the style from gym rat to chic student.

I don't know if this is something you would want to wear to school every day, but when I am in a hurry and I need my hair to look nice I put it in a french twist. It is super easy and fast, and it looks really classy. Here is a link with pictures showing how to do it:

I leave mine a little messy and use silver bobby pins so they look nice if they show.

My other advice would be to get some layers cut into it, it will make it look thicker and it will also make simple styles look a bit more interesting.

Well look Carefully...because the "volumizing" products are often just Claims, and may not do a lot more than "regular" shampoo and conditioners. But- there are products for after you wash your hair that could help. It's best to go to a prof salon and ask for advice. Also- they will probably recommend getting some of your length cut and getting layers, if that is something you would be willing to do...cutting and adding layers really adds volume naturally, and keeps your hair healthy!!

Skipping a day of washing your hair is a really good idea. Too much washing takes away a lot of the natural essential vitamins in the hair. If you still want to wet and blowdry everyday thats fine, but i would reccommend not washing it everyday.

I get my hair thinned with what they call the thinning or chunking shears, chances are if your hair dresser says its a bad idea its because she doesnt quite know what shes doing with them. I have mine done every other time i get my hair cut and i LOVE it , it is so much more comfortable . Regularly cutting your hair wont make it thinner but if your hair dresser wont thin it out then i would suggest getting a new hair dresser at least for a second opinion or getting your hair layered , get long layers though, short ones look realy choppy and if you have curly hair like mine it sticks up all over the place if you get short layers. I find with certain shampoos my hair does tend to become a bit thinner and just kinda sits flat because its so striaght.

Try a couple different shampoos. and certain ones for the scalp, like head and shoulders, something that simluates or refreshes your head.

There are alot of creams to leave in after your hair is washed. Certain types of brushes can pull more hair out and make it break easier. Try a couple different ones too, rubber, metal, plastic.. etc. use a comb when your hair is wet instead of a brush. sleep with a softer pillow case.

I dont work in a hair salon .. these are just things that have helped for me.

You could try using the Nioxon products. It is made for thing hair to help grow it back,but it actually stimulates the scalp%26amp; makes it grow %26amp; look thicker. It's not any extra...I've been getting my hair thinned my entire life, because it's so thick and unruly. They usually do it all over for me, and it doesn't affect what I want to do with my hair. If the stylist is skilled with the scissors, then you just get an overall lighter effect. I love it! It makes me not have sweaty head and bad hair days. Even with the thinning, my hair is nowhere near a "normal" weight. lol I would only do it if you have hair to spare. Otherwise, if you just want texture, you can get it razored/texturized.

Ok i am a 22 yr old african-american male. I had braids for two years. and i didnt really take care of my hair, cuz i didnt know anything bout hair and that blow drying, heat and whatnot damages it. But anyway, i noticed that the braids started taking my hair out in the front, so i cut it all off, and i thought that it would start growin normal once i cut it. But its been a year and its still thin. And i know im not going bald yet, im like 98% sure of that. actually getting ur hair thinned is not a good idea. First when u get it thinned it will look good for about a month. but after that, the hair will start growing out and will look so unnatural and weird.

Layers have a very similar effect to thinning. It also look very pretttyy, and much better than getting it thinned.

You may have to start fresh by getting a hair cut that you don't want...not much else a doctor could do i would think..i remember i had hair extensions done...it looked good but when i had them taken out most of my real hair went with it. I had bald spots..i was so disgusted and all i could do was wait for it to grow back...within a couple of months it started thickening up....go to a salon...that is your best bet

U could try using a straightening comb or flat iron it layer by layer and wrap it when u go to bed or just hanging around the house.

you should consider using leave in conditioner. it gets rid of the fizz. i use kiersilk, it is in a gray bottle. try getting layers in your hair but don't cut it short. leave it long. they only other thing getting a flat iron.

get a really good flat iron(ceramic and with different heat levels), and cut it sort of choppy, it makes it thinner without making it noticeable you cut your hair, but anti frizz things into your hair too, it help it stay hydtrated and shiny.. (usually straighten the night before b/c if your hair is like mine it'ss be real dry and stay kind of thick but the next day when more oils get into it it will be straighter and thinner..Idk if it sounds good but it's taken me 3 years to get this right)

and if you are going to blow dry it, get a blow dryer with ions b/c it's better for your hair.. use cold hair if you have time, if you don't once it's dried with hot air go over real quick with cool air to help prevent heat damage

also dyeing your hair sometimes thins it a bit.

from another big haired girl....I feel your pain.....and yes, straight irons will help, for about 3 hours or so...I have tried everthing!!!

It sounds really gross....but don't wash your hair as often. If I want my hair to be sleek, thin and shiny...I go about a week without washing...and if I have to...only conditioner...fructise sleek and shine....

The other tip I can give you....learn to love it....it will be with you forever...

OK sweet, I had the same problem, but is over now, you no what, I try JAPANESE STRAIGHTER, oh man works beautiful, the hair becomes shine, smooth and STRAIGHT, I love it, just try, u gonna love it. Is expensive don't forget but u gonna enjoy any penny u spend..

Oh curly thick hair is beautiful when thinned and layered. It lets you play up your curls to your advantage and it's gorgeous. When my hair was still curly (long before the chemical straightenings, colors, bleach lol) I got it layered and thinned.

It's perfectly safe :-) You'll have to get it thinned out every 6 months or so, or just whenever you feel like your hair is getting too thick to manage.

All the stylist is going to do is use what we call texturizing or thinning shears. They're scissors with notches on one blade that only cuts small PIECES of hair out instead of a whole chunk at a time. I thin my brother's hair often because he wears it long and its very thick and it makes his life so much easier. Just do it...you'll be happy.

i have naturally curly and thick hair. ive had it done. you have to keep getting it done! your hair grows! its not a one time deal. your head wont be as heavy if you get it done and of course its safe! its just a haircut!

Do you know what happened when they thin out your hair? I do it all because I have thick hair, and I love it because it's easier to take care of. They just take this "scissor" that looks like a razor blade and just shave some hair to make it thinner. But it only gets thinner at the bottom, because if they thinned it at the top it will look like a skunk mullet, that and you will have too many short layers on the top which will make you look silly. It won't stay like that because hair does grow and it will get thicker again. I get a haircut every month mostly because I want my hair to be healthy. I don't get it cut every month and thin it out though, just a trim. And yes, of course it's safe. There are no chemicals involved, it's just using a razor type blade to cut at the hair.
